In between writing this post, I was finishing up a Let’s Play of the highly anticipated Life is Strange (2015) prequel, Life is Strange: Before the Storm, which feels like an absolute kick in the gut.
Such an innocent-looking visual novel, right? I was quick to discuss DDLC with anyone who had already played and even recommend it to friends who specifically did not enjoy visual novels although some did not enjoy the initial stereotypical slog of a facade, everyone left with a new perspective on what the genre to bring and had an interesting experience nevertheless.

Doki Doki Literature Club is no different, pushing, not only the boundaries of the typical dating simulator genre, but forcing the player to go to game files, (similar to indie horror game, IMSCARED (2016)), to beat the game. Meta gaming and fourth-wall breaking has increasingly become popular with games such as Undertale (2015) and T he Stanley Parable (2013), pushing the limits of what we originally thought gaming to be. DDLC takes inspiration from other games in this genre but takes it to a whole new level, taking romance to downright disturbing fourth-wall breaking psychological horror.

Those who have seen the game probably are aware of what really makes this game special but anyone who isn’t already excited for or wary of this little game, should definitely try it for themselves as it’s free on Steam, heeding the in-game warnings of course. A short title to pass away a couple of hours, maybe introduce newcomers into the world of dating simulators. Dream Daddy is a dream to play.ĭoki Doki Literature Club arrived online as an innocent little visual novel, free for anyone to try out. It truly is a heartwarming visual novel that really brought the community together due to its LGTBQ+ progressiveness, dedicated focus on family in its storytelling and pop-culture flair. For me, this wasn’t just a dating simulator allowing you to meet hot dads, a big part of it was looking after your teenage daughter Amanda and provides a pure look into the dedication single parents have to make sure their children turn out okay. Playing the game myself, I could not count the number of times I squealed or face-palmed over pop culture references of memes, films and music, or truly felt for the fathers’ relationships with their children. A game where a dad, created by the player as a Dadsona, dates other dads the premise seems simple but it is in the absolute charm and heart put into crafting this very gay dad-venture. In July, the popular YouTube gaming duo, Arin Hanson and Dan Avidan, the Game Grumps, dropped their own visual novel, Dream Daddy, which became an instant hit, spreading to even the more mainstream gaming community as it held the top spot in the Steam Store.
